State
Agencies The
State Attorney General's Office is often responsible for enforcing
consumer protection laws and laws governing non-profit organizations
like non-profit hospitals. State Departments of Health also have
jurisdiction over health care facilities like hospitals and nursing
homes. Many states have separate departments of mental health
that have regulatory responsibility for psychiatric hospitals
and community services. State Departments of Insurance have regulatory
responsibility for health insurance companies and managed care
companies that are licensed in the state. Most states have programs
to assist low-income families to obtain health insurance for their
children: Children's
Health Insurance. State boards of licensure or registration
in medicine, nursing, and other medical professions are responsible
for licensing and disciplining health professionals and investigate
complaints concerning a licensee's professional conduct.
